Sri. Dr. Sunkavalli Venkataratnam
Dr. S. V. Ratnam (1952-2022), Former Dean, Senior Professor and Head of Department of Radiation Oncology, NIMS Hyderabad, completed his residency from the MNJ Institute of Oncology, Hyderabad in 1980. He was instrumental in establishing the Oncology Departments including the Linac installations at the Gujarat Cancer Research Institute, Ahmedabad and the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad. His professional career in Radiation Oncology spans more than three decades. He joined NIMS in 1988 and worked there till his retirement in 2012. During his tenure at NIMS he served on various leadership positions including as Dean (2004-2006), Medical Superintendent (2005-2007) and Head of Department of Radiation Oncology (1992-2012). His vision and untiring efforts led to the establishment of state of the art Teletherapy and HDR brachytherapy facilities at NIMS. He has contributed significantly towards improving patient care, training and research in Oncology. The MD and DNB Radiation Oncology courses at NIMS were started under his leadership and he has mentored many generations of postgraduate students over the years. He was well loved and respected by his colleagues, staff and patients.
